HPV vaccinations in schools

As of September 1, 2024 the implementation of the HPV vaccination program, which is part of the National Oncology Strategy (NSO), is extended to include vaccinations performed in primary schools.
SZPZLO Warszawa-Ochota, as an entity providing primary health care services, has declared its readiness to carry out vaccinations in 21 schools in the following districts:

  • Desire,
  • Ursus,
  • Italy,
  • and in the Raszyn commune.

HPV vaccinations are recommended and therefore voluntary. The decision to vaccinate is made by the parent and then by the primary care physician who qualifies for vaccination.

O chorobie

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common cause of genital infections in humans. In most cases, the infection is asymptomatic and undergoes spontaneous remission. However, in several to a dozen or so percent of infected people, lesions develop in various locations. So far, approximately 200 genotypes of the virus have been identified, 14 of which are considered high-risk genotypes for the development of cancer. HPV is responsible for the development of precancerous conditions and cancers of the cervix, penis, vulva, and head and neck cancers. Approximately 70% of cervical cancers worldwide are caused by HPV 16 and 18, and genotype 16 predominates in all HPV-related cancers. There are no medications available against HPV, but there are vaccines that reduce the risk of cancers caused by the virus.

Dla kogo?

The vaccination program is carried out for children (girls and boys) after the age of 9 and until the age of 14. For people born in 2010 Vaccination must be started by the age of 14. years of age and can be terminated after the age of 14. years of age (following the two-dose regimen). Children who meet the age requirements for vaccination and who have already received the first dose of vaccination (outside the program) on the day the program begins may receive the next dose as part of the program.

Jakie szczepionki są dostępne?

Both registered vaccines are available in the program:

  • 9-valent – Gardasil 9. Gardasil 9 vaccine targets HPV types 6, 11, 16, 18, 31, 33, 45, 52, 58
  • Bivalent – Cervarix. The Gardasil 9 vaccine targets types HPV-16 and HPV-18.

A parent has the right to decide which vaccine their child should be vaccinated with. Vaccination is carried out in a two-dose schedule. A parent does not have to (but may) be present when their child is vaccinated at school.

Jak zapisać się na szczepienie w szkołach?

Parents interested in vaccinating their children against HPV in schools should first contact the vaccination coordinator at the school designated by the school's principal. The coordinator will provide you with documents to complete, i.e. consent to vaccinate the child and a statement and declaration of the choice of vaccine and will inform about the vaccination date.

Schools interested in collaborating with SZPZLO Warszawa-Ochota regarding HPV vaccinations should contact the School Vaccination Coordinator at SZPZLO Warszawa-Ochota, Ms. Dorota Beczko, at d.beczko@szpzlo-ochota.pl
